Q: How Do I Discover Who I’m Really Meant to Be?

A: This question shows up in my office in different ways: “What’s my purpose?” “Why do I feel so lost?” “How do I know if I’m on the right path?” At the core, we’re all asking the same thing—who am I really meant to be?

Here’s what I’ve learned from walking this journey with clients and in my own life:

God didn’t create you as a generic human. You were created in a particular time and place, with particular talents and temperaments, strengths and limitations. All of it—even the parts you wish were different—has purpose.

When we struggle with identity:

Maybe you’ve spent so much time trying to be who others need you to be that you’ve lost touch with who God made you to be. Perhaps anxiety or depression has convinced you that your limitations disqualify you from purpose. Or maybe you’re so focused on your brokenness that you can’t see your strengths.

What it means to be created with purpose:

  • You were created to praise, love, and serve God. But here’s the beautiful part—the best way to do that isn’t by becoming someone else. It’s by being fully, authentically who God made you to be.

  • God creates you out of love. Not obligation. Not utility. Love. Your worth isn’t based on what you produce or achieve—it’s inherent in being God’s creation.

  • God continues to create and reveal. This journey isn’t finished. God is still showing you who He is and who you are before Him. Give yourself permission to be a work in progress.

  • You’re invited to partner with God. You’re not passive in this process. God invites you to build a more just and gentle world alongside Him, using your unique design.

Practical steps for discovering who you’re meant to be:

  • Seek first His kingdom. As Matthew 6:33 reminds us, when we prioritize God’s kingdom and righteousness, everything else falls into place. This isn’t about perfect performance—it’s about orientation.

  • Honor your uniqueness. Your particular temperament isn’t a flaw to fix. Your strengths aren’t accidents. Your limitations aren’t failures. They’re part of your specific design.

  • Learn to honor others’ uniqueness too. Part of discovering who you are involves celebrating who others are without comparison or competition.

  • Embrace who you are before God. Not who you think you should be. Not who others expect you to be. Who you actually are—with all your strengths, limitations, gifts, and growing edges.

  • Notice your particular time and place. You weren’t born in a different era or location by accident. The context of your life is part of your purpose.

Ask God to reveal. Pray for willingness to see yourself as God sees you—created with love, invited to partnership, uniquely designed for purposes you’re still discovering.

Remember this Truth in God’s Word:

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” ~ Matthew 6:33 (NIV)

The best way to praise God is to be who God made you to be. Not a better version of someone else. Not a perfect version of yourself. Just… you. Fully alive. Fully present. Fully embraced by the One who created you with such intentional love.
